Instagram Adds Shopping Features

Everyone has seen those people on Instagram who try to sell products by showcasing the product in their photo and saying to visit the link in their bio to buy and get more information. Well, Instagram has noticed these people too. That is why they are releasing a shopping feature which allows you to make purchases from within the app from select brands. Brands such as J.Crew, Kate Spade, and Warby Parker will be able to sell their products through this feature upon its release.

A bit like photos that have people tagged in them have a black people icon in the bottom left, photos that have shoppable products in them will have a white shopping cart icon in the bottom left. Tapping on the photo when this icon is present presents you with the products that you can buy on the photo in the same format as tags. Clicking on one of the products takes you to its information page in which you can learn more about the product and also make the purchase.

What Does This Mean For You?

Unless you see the idea of shopping on Instagram from very select brands as appealing, pretty much nothing. A lot of people will not care about this feature. I don’t suspect Instagram will see a large amount of people using this feature. Maybe later on down the line when non retailers such as celebrities and influencers can use the feature more people will make purchases on Instagram. Quite frankly I don’t really see the point of making a purchase through Instagram. I suspect the journey of the purchase will be quite clunky as it is still not a fully working product, however, this is a step in the right direction for Instagram and will most likely be a big feature a year or so down the line once Instagram has figured out what they want to do with the feature and people start using it.

 

 

What Does This Mean For Instagram?

Instagram hopes to become the middle man in the sales that happen on its platform by providing an easier way for people to shop and also by providing an area where you can manage your sales. Of course, Instagram will take a cut of the earnings made using this new feature but that is expected at this stage. If Instagram nails this feature down and opens it up to anyone who wants to make a sale, then it will go a long way for their revenue plan.

An idea I had and maybe Instagram has had too is only allowing brands to add items to the marketplace but allowing everyone to advertise the product on their photos. This means that if anyone wants to sell the brands products they can do. Furthermore, there could be a sales section of Instagram which could give brands a lot of control over who gets to sell their products on the platform, how much of a cut they get for it and etc.
