Olympic Games: The Mother of All Malware

by Rassoul EdjiOctober 24, 2016

Olympic Games: A malware that was made to infiltrate and attack Iranian centrifuges in Natanz. The malware got into the facility and destroyed the centrifuges without leaving a trace.

Olympic Games was a covert operation by the USA and Israel to slow or stop Iran’s nuclear efforts. This was because of their concern that “religious zealots” would get access to nuclear weapons and then there may be severe consequences that the world would have to deal with.

Olympic Games, or Stuxnet, attack was successful in some ways. Wiping out a third of Iran’s centrifuges. However, some may argue that the attack triggered a larger spike in Iran’s nuclear efforts. Iran’s nuclear ambition increased substantially after the attack. Iran even went as far as attacking some infrastructures as to show the world that they can also launch cyber attacks.

If this event interests you then be sure to watch Alex Gibney’s ‘Zero Days’ documentary. The documentary goes into full detail about what happened and how it happened. Definitely worth the watch.
